You're right. Private lessons are an investment. The difference is that I offer personalized attention and structure. A good coach doesn't just teach tactics - I help your child develop critical thinking, resilience, and patience. These skills go far beyond the chessboard.
And believe it or not, compared to other extracurriculars like music or sports, chess can actually be more affordable over time when you consider its lifelong benefits.

Totally understandable! Many of my students have vacations, sports, and other activities outside of school. One of the biggest benefits of private lessons is flexibility. They can often be scheduled around your existing commitments, unlike team sports, which usually have fixed practices and games.
Plus, an hour of focused chess can be stimulating, fun, and mentally refreshing making it a fulfilling use of time. For many kids, it’s actually a great way to unwind while still learning something valuable.

Great question and yes, there’s a big difference. While casual play and online videos are helpful, they don’t correct bad habits, address blind spots, or provide a structured path for improvement.
As a coach, I can recognize patterns in your child’s play, give specific feedback, and tailor lessons to their unique strengths and challenges - something a YouTube video just can't do.
Think of it like a bacon and egg breakfast: the egg was involved (YouTube), but the bacon was committed (me)!
